Non Surgical Fat Removal : Fact or Myth

Each year, lakhs of both men and women get non-surgical fat removal done. Non-surgical fat removal is a less invasive alternative to “regular” liposuction, but it is a fact or just a myth created by marketing ? The answer is not a straightforward yes or no.
Is it as effective as regular liposuction?
Non-surgical fat removal is often marketed as“non-surgical” liposuction, but in fact, it isn’t liposuction at all. Traditional liposuction is a surgical procedure, requiring anesthesia. It involves small incisions in hidden areas through which a tube is inserted into a fatty area. The fat is then “sucked out” through the tube, using vacuum, resulting in permanent removal of those fat cells. Liposuction can be used on large fatty areas and is effective after just one procedure most of the time. Liposuction is a day care surgery, and there is some recovery time with swelling, pain and a minimal risk of infection.
Non-surgical fat removal involves destruction of fat cells using energy in the form of lasers, heat, cooling or sound waves. It is a office procedure, has less-to-no recovery time but it non effective on large areas of fat. Its use should be limited to very small areas of fat or to patients who cannot undergo surgery. In order to be fully effective, multiple treatments are required.
Types of non-surgical fat removal procedures
Non-surgical fat removal is done in the clinic, using one of a number of proprietary procedures.Various fancy brand names like “Vela Shape”,”Cool Lipo”,Smart lipo” and “Liposonix” are used. Each uses a different type of energy source which may be laser or light-assisted, cryo or freezing therapy, or sound through ultrasound or radiofrequency which works by destroying the cell membranes surrounding fat cells which over time, may appear to dissolve the fat away.
Advantages and Disadvantages of non-surgical fat reduction
Advantages: Non-surgical fat reduction is non-surgical procedure. No incisions means a non-invasive procedure with less recovery time required, less swelling and pain. It doesn’t usually require a lot of pre-procedure preparation and can often be done during the day with a quick return to normal activities.
Disadvantages: Results are not apparent in the very beginning, the actual fat reduction takes place over a period of weeks to months and several sittings are required. It is more difficult for the clinician to target treatments areas and may need to use a less optimal type in difficult areas. Targeting is also very difficult as the physician cannot immediately make out where fat reduction has been effective and must wait for additional sittings to refine the effects. Non-surgical fat reduction is not effective in people who need large areas of fat removed.
Conclusion
Liposuction, under an expert , is a very effective procedure, more accurate and can be used in various conditions. Newer techniques of surgical liposuction procedures have enabled cosmetic surgeons to be precise in fat removal with a minimum of post-surgical complications. In general, liposuction is more effective, but non-surgical fat removal is a good for those in whom surgery is not possible. So, non -surgical fat removal works for the right patient but it is not comparable to traditional liposuction. Non-invasive fat removal, brings limited results, so it’s important to discuss with your treating doctor how is going to change the true body contour, as opposed to what is advertised.
